My mom got me started on meeting dogs. She takes 10 treats a day with her on her walks...just mini little treats, and feeds the 10 dogs on her route. I thought it was the cutest thing ever, so I met two dogs yesterday.
I met Owen, and Irish Corgi
I also met a dog named Ford.
I don't know what kind of dog Ford was, but I know he was "built strong". Well, that is what his really nice owner said.
However, if I ever met THIS dog-giraffe, I think I would cry tears of joy and excitement...
Self-Made Man or Mysterious Stranger? Charles Krauthammer Friday, August 29, 2008
WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama is an immensely talented man whose talents have been largely devoted to crafting, and chronicling, his own life. Not things. Not ideas. Not institutions. But himself.
Nothing wrong or even terribly odd about that, except that he is laying claim to the job of crafting the coming history of the United States. A leap of such audacity is odd. The air of unease at the Democratic convention this week was not just a result of the Clinton psychodrama. The deeper anxiety was that the party was nominating a man of many gifts but precious few accomplishments -- bearing even fewer witnesses.
When John Kerry was introduced at his convention four years ago, an honor guard of a dozen mates from his Vietnam days surrounded him on the podium attesting to his character and readiness to lead. Such personal testimonials are the norm. The roster of fellow soldiers or fellow senators who could from personal experience vouch for John McCain is rather long. At a less partisan date in the calendar, that roster might even include Democrats Russ Feingold and Edward Kennedy, with whom John McCain has worked to fashion important legislation.
Eerily missing at the Democratic convention this year were people of stature who were seriously involved at some point in Obama's life standing up to say: I know Barack Obama. I've been with Barack Obama. We've toiled/endured together. You can trust him. I do.
Hillary Clinton could have said something like that. She and Obama had, after all, engaged in a historic, utterly compelling contest for the nomination. During her convention speech, you kept waiting for her to offer just one line of testimony: I have come to know this man, to admire this man, to see his character, his courage, his wisdom, his judgment. Whatever. Anything.
Instead, nothing. She of course endorsed him. But the endorsement was entirely programmatic: We're all Democrats. He's a Democrat. He believes what you believe. So we must elect him -- I am currently unavailable -- to get Democratic things done. God bless America.
Clinton's withholding the "I've come to know this man" was vindictive and supremely self-serving -- but jarring, too, because you realize that if she didn't do it, no one else would. Not because of any inherent deficiency in Obama's character. But simply as a reflection of a young life with a biography remarkably thin by the standard of presidential candidates.
Who was there to speak about the real Barack Obama? His wife. She could tell you about Barack the father, the husband, the family man in a winning and perfectly sincere way. But that only takes you so far. It doesn't take you to the public man, the national leader.
Who is to testify to that? Hillary's husband on night three did aver that Obama is "ready to lead." However, he offered not a shred of evidence, let alone personal experience with Obama. And although he pulled it off charmingly, everyone knew that, having been suggesting precisely the opposite for months, he meant not a word of it.
Obama's vice presidential selection, Joe Biden, naturally advertised his patron's virtues, such as the fact that he had "reached across party lines to ... keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists." But securing loose nukes is as bipartisan as motherhood and as uncontroversial as apple pie. The measure was so minimal that it passed by voice vote and received near zero media coverage.
Thought experiment. Assume John McCain had retired from politics. Would he have testified to Obama's political courage in reaching across the aisle to work with him on ethics reform, a collaboration Obama boasted about in the Saddleback debate? "In fact," reports the Annenberg Political Fact Check, "the two worked together for barely a week, after which McCain accused Obama of 'partisan posturing'" -- and launched a volcanic missive charging him with double cross.
So where are the colleagues? The buddies? The political or spiritual soul mates? His most important spiritual adviser and mentor was Jeremiah Wright. But he's out. Then there's William Ayers, with whom he served on a board. He's out. Where are the others?
The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger -- a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair. Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night.

This is bebo norman's love song to britney spears. Not that kind of love song. But the love song that proclaims that we should be lifting up those around us - even celebrities. The video is just clips of britney, which is not the best cut of stuff, but I more so wanted you to hear the song.
Now, I pretty much got dumb chills when I saw this. Is this really what the Pt Loma film program has come to? Now, I am not sure this was put on by a media comm kid from pt loma, but it is from pt loma's campus, and I did see the Dr. Benefield cameo...
Anyway, the more interesting part of this video is where it came from...
Make that 50 minutes, three guys, and an ENTIRE ring of keys. To which none work.
The guy that just left said, "So how long do you plan to be up?" and I said "Until it gets fixed".
I think that made him upset, but REALLY?!?!, are you kidding me? All my stuff is in the bathroom for tomorrow, I am screwed unless this is taken care of by 7am tomorrow morning. What kind of hotel has auto locking bathroom doors? And no keys to open them with??? All my dreams of going to bed at 10:30...crushed...GRRRRR...I feel like there is some evil cosmic plan in which I am not allowed to get normal amounts of sleep or rest...
The comedy in this situation is leaving me very quickly...
So now it has been 40 minutes and two guys have already been up and neither can get the door open. GRRRR...this is SO not funny...
I am literally forcing my eyes to stay open. They have to call another guy in. *praying* that this can be resolved ASAP. Must sleep....
On top of it, tomorrow I am flying to burbank (where I flew out of today) getting my car, and driving to downtown LA for the DCFC show (which will also be over late). There is too much going on...
Another amazing adventure - here is the back story - I am exhausted and ready for bed. I am in Mt View for work and staying at a hotel. I was ready for bed at 10:30 hoping to get a nice long amount of sleep before my alarm goes off at 6:50am.
I went to the bathroom, and afterward I shut the door. I realized I wanted something else out of the bathroom and it is LOCKED. I hadn't shut the door at all before, so I guess it auto locks behind you. This was at 10:30. I called downstairs, they came up at 10:45 with some keys. They don't work.
So now I am waiting to see what will happen. I wish I could be angry, but I am mostly just delirous and laughing to myself like a mad woman. I am praying that they can figure it out by midnight....the bright side - at least I figured it out tonight and A) not in the middle of the night when I needed to actually use the bathroom or B) in the morning when I have a small amount of time to get ready....
I got to see New Kids on the Block! MAJOR probs to Amber for securing these premium and much desired tickets.
This was NKOTB's first show in FIFTEEN years. That is over half my life BTW.
The night opened with a powerful short documentary - highlighting the kids career and where they hope to take the band in the future. A rushing flood of elementary school memories came back to me as footage from the cartoon, concerts, etc montage flashed before us. The build up was incredible - these fans are STILL crazy.
They opened up the show with a past songs medley - Step by Step, Please don't go girl, Hanging Tough, You got it (The Right Stuff), Stop it Girl, and probably some others that I forgot about.
Then after the medley was completed, Donny introduced the group to the crowd. (As if we needed it). From there they performed their new single "Summertime". It was super fun, and the boys were just as great as they were back in the day. It was so crazy - and I was glad I had earplugs, as the screaming was just as loud as back in the day. I remember reports that the screaming was so loud you couldn't even hear the kids singing.
After Summertime, they closed with the crowd favorite "Tonight" from the Step by Step album. The crowd sang seamlessly in unison - as if the past 18 years didn't separate us from each other - yet drew us all together. (That song was released in 1990).
I saw at least 4 NKOTB black and red hanging tough tour bomber jackets. AMAZING.
I took an online test about how much sleep one needs in any particular day.
This is the response I got:
Your answers to the Epworth Sleepiness Test indicate you may be significantly sleep-deprived. You may wish to consult with your physician to discuss further investigation.
I believe it! :) Only, I don't need a physician to tell me that. I just need to sleep more.
I wish I could have a bunch of you guys over to participate in watching, but going home for Mother's day stuff, and most of you are probably doing the AIDS walk with Rock Harbor.
I am currently at SFO waiting for my flight back to Orange County. People watching at the airport is amazing. In honor of airports I give you this YouTube video. And I was at the YouTube headquarters this week for work - let me just say - AMAZING. Great office.
This video has been a favorite since 2002-ish MTV-era. When I worked at MTV I would check out beta tapes and make dubs to 1/2 inch for myself. I had tapes and tapes of music videos that probably never even aired on MTV or VH1. I miss music videos. I don't watch enough of them these days.
I should put together a youtube video playlist of my all time fave videos and post to my blog. Look for that soon!
I was SO excited for the new Panic! At the Disco album. Like, so excited.
So I pre-ordered, naturally, on itunes.
This is the biggest waste of recorded space since....since...(i don't have time to pilfer for some amazing reference online) Flo Rida. That is as good as I got right now.
This video makes me LOVE art. And makes me want to run off Europe to meet up with artists under the Eiffel tower. Then I realize that will never work. :)
Tokyo Police Club -
This video makes me want to open up an indie rock club, in Newport of course, and have a photo booth. I would serve Stella, and have really stylistic bartenders, and lots of poloroid cameras. Then I realize that will never work.
And thus, I must go back to work, and once again obey math.
Pretty sweet - sort of reminds me of Phantom Planet/Rooney/Strokes meets a dark hipster lounge (LA, not NYC) with lots of indie kids standing around, not moving, but totally in love with every note they hear. There is also this strange bit of 70's (doors maybe?) that I can't shake when I hear it, and I can't identify what about it makes me feel that way. Something about the effects on the vocals.
This was actually a really compelling and fun personality test to take. You can mouse over the different colors to see what they mean and how they relate to my personality. I think I have completed hundreds of these, but it was fun nontheless.. :)
This topic of top life songs has been coming up a lot recently.
And what an impossible task, right? A life mix sort of implies that it would sum up your entire life. There are so many songs yet to be written that I have yet to fall in love with. There are Nirvana's, Pearl Jam's, Radiohead's, Something Corporate's, and Miley Cyrus' yet to graze the music scene. Maybe artists who are not even born yet that I will like at one point in my life.
That said, I still think that we should open up some type of community "share your life" mix forum with each other. (since I pretty much know the four of you who read this regularly)
What would it include? How would it even flow? Would it be your favorite songs, or songs playing during important instances in your life?
I once hit car while an Marilyn Manson song was on the radio. I get the total creeps if I hear that song, because it was as if life stood still because I was in such shock that I was in an accident, and I hadn't realized the song was on (I was listening to KROQ). Then it was all I could hear.
Anyway, make up your own rules. Then give me your life mix. I am curious to see what songs make up the friends that I love so dearly.
I have 14 songs on my mix so far:
1. Weezer - Say it ain't so 2. Better Than Ezra - Despartely Wanting 3. Toadies - Possum Kingdom 4. Alanis Morisette - Head over Feet 5. The Cure - Just like Heaven 6. Queen - Don't Stop Me Now 7. Oingo Boingo - Not My Slave (great story about this song...) 8. Jeff Buckley - Lover, you should come over 9. Better Than Ezra - Get you in 10. Jimmy Eat World - Work 11. Nada Surf - Inside of Love 12. Shine - A random worship song from my old church 13. Death Cab for Cutie - Debate Exposes Doubt 14. U2 - I still haven't found what I am looking for
Flip through the photo album, it is quite hilarious as they show some of Marshall and Lilly in "Scotland" (Although it looks more like a swamp in the hollywood hills...)
Also, note that Marshall always has a hat on, since his head is awesomely shaved...
"aromachology" – the study of how smell really affects us and how that can inform the art of perfume (Christopher Brosius).
Everyone has the experience of taking a deep breath, only to smell some aroma from the past. I learn from smells. I used to have these smelly-good markers (as I affectionately called them) in jr. high in which I would take notes in. If I smelled the pen before the test I would remember what I wrote. Maybe in reality I have a photogenic memory, but maybe, just maybe it is a aromagenic memory.
Anyway, for years I have tried to figure out what this would be called. The sense of smell is so important and maybe I should become an aromachologist as a side gig. ;)
I am just going to be honest right now - I happen to enjoy a lot of media targeted to tweens. High School Musical, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and most of all Hannah Montana, to name a few. It is the inner pop princess in me I suppose.
I love Ashley Tisdale (pre-nose job) and Miley Cyrus - and their music careers.
If I could download, I would get "See you again" in a flash of an itunes purchase. It is in the queue for the day after Easter.
Just look at the beauty of these lyrics:
"The last time I freaked out I just kept looking down I st-st-stuttered when you asked me what I'm thinking 'bout Felt like I couldn't breathe You asked what's wrong with me My best friend Leslie said "oh she's just being Miley" The next time we hang out I will redeem myself My heart can't rest 'till then Oh woah woah, I, I can't wait to see you again"
I wish I had a little sister or that my cousins were closer because I would SO try to score some Miley tickets.
My new series is going to be devoted to classic mall moments from the 90's.
The first...drum roll...
Cinnabon!
In a time where calorie counters were a thing of the future, people would woof down Cinnabon's by the dozen.
I can remember going to the mall in the early 90's and wanting to swing by Cinnabon for a warm, gooey cultural phenom. A pre-cursor to the Krispy Kreme's and Sprinkle's of the world, Cinnabon, you take the cake. (Pun intended)
I don't think I could actually eat one now though, but innocence was bliss back in the day...
Lord as I offer Everything, I pray that my life would make You pleased, that I might move mountains, wake the sea, oh that Your light would shine through me.
In honor of Loventine's Day, here would be my anti-Valentine's Day mix. I had to. ;)
Mixes are just too much fun...
1. Get Up Kids - Valentine *Key Lyric - "Those you words you forget, two Anniversary songs" - for those who were hip and with it in 00, that Anniversary is in relation to the band (and my frog, may he rest in peace) 2. Dramarama - Anything, Anything *key lyric - I give you diamonds, give you pills, give you anything you want, hundred dollar bills (true romance) 3. Dashboard Confessional - Again I go unnoticed *key lyric - please tell me your just feeling tired, cuz if its more than that I fear that I might break 4. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity key lyric - wait for something better, but baby that doesn't mean us 5. Better than Ezra - Porcelain *key lyric - hey you got a lot of nerve, to dredge up all my fear, well i wish i could shake some sense into you and walk out the door, but your skin is like porcelain. 6. Kate Nash - Foundations key lyric - My fingernails are holding on to the cracks in our foundation 7. Nada Surf - Inside of Love key lyric - only when we get to see the aerial view, will the patterns show, we will know what to do 8. Something Corporate - You're Gone key lyric - I wish i could, i know i should, but you know, i know, i won't 9. Jack's Mannequin - Bruised key lyric - had to give it away, had to give you away 10. Death Cab for Cutie - Tiny Vessels key lyric - this is the moment, that you know, that you told you that you loved her but you don't. touch her skin, and then you think, she is beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me. yeah, she is beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me.
Yes, I know. The jokes have been made. We have all laughed, but the song that was BURNED into my head as a youth has been uncovered in God's gift to everyone - YouTube. I <3 YouTube. If anyone of you want to see the Pocket Rocker in all its glory, maybe I will open up my "Box of Technology" for you.....
Again, hadn't seen this clip in probably 18 years...it was glorious to find it....
Tonight on my way home from LG, I was listening to KRTH 101. The Smokey Robinson song "You really got a hold on me" came on. Instantly I saw a giant dancing "U" in my head. It was driving me crazy, while cruising on Newport Blvd, when it hit me - SESAME STREET
So, when I got home, I YouTube'd "Sesame Street, Smokey Robinson" to find the very clip I had envisioned. I will venture to say that I was probably 4 or 5 when I orgininally saw this, which makes the memory about 21 to 22 years ago. CREEPY....
Since 08 is pretty much as "blogtastic" as 04, I decided to dig up some old posts from my livejournal account. 2002-2004 were big blogging years for me.

In a fit of pre-V Day spite, I decided to take another look at my Match.com account.
However, after I began to update my account information, (or stare at the blank screen for 45 minutes) I realized that I am not "normal" - but in an amazing way.
For example - I don't think I can write a dating statement. This is basically your "hook" for someone, similar to a myspace/facebook quote. There are all these hilarious guidelines in writing a successful dating statement, mine didn't quite fit.
Here is what I got, and realized this was a complete waste of time:
*Looking for someone to geek out with? *Want someone who will crush your high score on Tetris? *Interested in someone with good rss feed management? (I had to add that one, that is what all Godly men want, right?) *I break for computer nerds. *Mac using, iPhone touting, VW driving, punk rock princess. Garage band kings please apply. *Want to be in my rock band? I'll play drums like Meg White - you can be lead guitar and vocals - but the video game version, of course.
I can't take this seriously.
Ok God, I get it. I get it. I will wait...You really like watching this journey though, don't you?
Tiffany is not to buy any new music until the day after Easter - which includes any iTunes downloads, Target impulse buys, or trips to Second Spin or Amoeba.
Tiffany *is* allowed to get music from friends/family/co-worker spot bonuses - as long as it is unasked for. (this is not a plea, this is just so I don't get criticized if this does happen)
Tiffany *is* allowed to download via iTunes if given an iTunes gift card from family for Valentines Day.
Tiffany *is* allowed to get any legal, free downloads on the internet (ie Stereogum free downloads, itunes free download of the week, etc.)
The main reason for Lent is to remember the sacrifice that was given to us - not about rules. However, daily at work, home, etc, I am reminded of amazing songs that I want for my collection. During this time frame when I am reminded of these things I want, I am going to recognize why I want them (Reason: You gotta have Rock) and give thanks for all the stuff and gigs of music that I *do* have.
Honestly, this may be the greatest sacrifice ever. I should have given up chocolate.
This year I would really like to go to Italy. I was at Urban Outfitters a few weeks ago and I found this necklace that has a few different Italian charms - a charm of the shape of Italy, a gondola, a charm that says "amore" , and a charm that looks to be a catholic symbol.
My grandfather is/was Italian (what is the proper tense when someone has passed?) It has been almost 4 years since he passed away. It is so bizarre. He was a defining role in our family. He brought life, joy, and humor into all of our lives.
When I was in college he faithfully sent me a care package each week - fully of candy, starbucks cards, wendy's cards, soups, or anything I even remotely mentioned that I liked. He also sent $30 a week so I wouldn't have to work. Amazing that I lived off that much back then. That is barely one meal these days...
He also created a "secret drawer" for me, my brother, and my cousins. Whenever we would come over, we each had our own drawer in his desk. Inside would usually be some $$, candy, or some surprise of some sort. It was pretty amazing.
Anyway, today I was at borders and there was a Fodor's learn Italian CD set with bonus Fodor's travel guide on sale for $9.99. I decided that I couldn't pass it up. So even if I start in a small way, I am going to put the Italian CD's on my iTunes, iPod, and iPhone (the Tri-fecta) so I can study whenever I have any free time.
Weezer Announce Release Date for New Album Mark your calendars, boys and girls. The new Weezer album, which the boys are affectionately referring to as "Album Six" for the moment, has a release date. I bet you want to know what that release date is, don't you? Here, just have it: April 22, 2008. Hey, that's Jack Nicholson's birthday! Coincidence?? Er, probably.
"Weezer fans truly have something to look forward to," gushed Weezer bassist Scott Shriner about the new Weezer album on the Weezer website. "The entire band has accomplished some of its most challenging goals as a group and as individuals. It's all coming together on this album." Throw your Weezer signs in the sky, guys!
Of course, that's hardly the only thing cooking in camp Weezer of late. As previously reported, Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo-- the one with the Ice Cube cover-- lands December 11 via Geffen. You know, I listen to a lot of Ice Cube when I'm all by myself too.
Tomorrow the Nada Surf album officially comes out. If you don't already have some type of advanced copy, I would highly recommend the purchase.
There is a song called "Beautiful Beat" which basically describes how amazing music can be and how he tried to fix all his problems through sound. While this is probably not the best way to go through life, it also isn't a terrible way either. Music really can touch a lot of places that friends sometimes have difficulty relating to. It is what makes it so powerful and relate-able.
I think Mikkele is probably going to crack up right now, but I am totally on a soap box right now about the community aspect of music. Without the community aspect of music, you have sound that means nothing. Yet, gather people around, let them enjoy, discuss, and yearn to hear the song more than once. That is the true power of a good song - even if only two people in the world like a song, it is more meaningful to have somebody to share that love with.
For me, the song that I love that probably everyone in the world would hate is a small list of the following: *Halo - by Haley James Scott (yes, I know it is fictional, but it is on the soundtrack!) *Every time we touch - by Cascada (euro techno at its best, but uber annoying after listen 300) *Real Love - Mary J. Blige
My philosophy - like what you like. You will always find someone else who you can share that with.
I am now officially home. Home from one of the most fun trips I have had with friends, all time, ever. Home from a fantastic Super Bowl party.
The ending to this story is that we made it home. And by we I mean me. (Oh! I made it work! Yes!!!) No, we all made it home. Despite a snowstorm that would rival those on planet Hoth and a sandstorm that even the sand people of Tatooine would have been startled by, we prevailed! I was so thankful for boys who know how to put chains on cars.
Moments that I don't want to forget:
Mikkele thinking that "pain" was "pam" on my pictonary-ish game
Kevin flipping over Rechelle (literally, there is a picture to prove it)
Guitar Hero! Long live "My Name is Jonas!"
Sunday Morning controlled chaos - chains being lost, cars getting stuck, unstuck, getting chains, and getting down that mountain! It was an adventure...
"God" talking to Alice, Mikkele, and I. Apparently the way to God's heart is through Nachos (with cheese, btw), cookies, and carrots for his reindeer. And by "God" I mean Cody. If you don't obey God is going to make all Tuesday's Monday's from now on. Oh the horror!
My idea for a band name "And if by We I mean Me" and no one got it :)
Hearing not only Jars of Clay, but also DC Talk, on the way up the mtn. It was glorious to have these shared experiences.
I just said "Mathematically speaking" which made me also hysterically giggle after that, only because I really needed to use math to get my point across.
I <3 Math. Math is hot.
Alice - got two tickets to math camp this year? :)
My favorites are the Radiohead and Bjork re-imaginations as lullabies. This is the perfect way for kids to become familiarized with good music, to get their brain thinking/enjoying all things amazing. :)
I am pretty ecstatic that in one week from today (next Tues) the new Nada Surf album will be out.
It is called "Lucky" - so naturally I think it is written for me since I am feeling lucky. (bonus points if you get this reference, it REALLY isn't hard) Let's also not recall the few times I used that statement.
Person I don't know : "You work for company x?" Me: "Why? Are you feeling lucky?"
I really need to stop using that - it NEVER pans out well. ;)
But seriously, this is going to be so amazing. Check out the album at their myspace link above - I like "The Film Did Not Go Round" - but who am I kidding? I love the ENTIRE thing.
Nada Surf makes me feel like I want to buy an old convertible vw bug - put the top down, and drive up the cost, wearing giant indie-oldie sunglasses, tights, and a sweater dress. Stopping all along the way to take the obligatory myspace/facebook/blogger pictures. Preferably with a poloroid camera, because that makes pictures look more vintage. Maybe I would wear a giant hat, in Audrey Hepburn style. Or not. At least that is what the music video would look like if I made it.
Anyway, it is right up there with Jimmy Eat World in the "bands that mean something" chart.
Panera - I LOVE the vegetarian soup - I had it tonight.
Mint and Chip Ice Cream
American Idol
Ryan Seacrest - especially when he says things like the rain this weekend was "unbearable" - I almost crashed because I was laughing so hard on my way to work this morning
the potential New Kids reunion - what could make a day better than that news? :)
Lost tomorrow night! More creepy Ben! More Sawyer and Kate - and Jack - triangles! More mystery. What was the name of Ben's boss - hmm...Jacob? More Jacob! And black freaky smoke
My mom and her awesome stories about Sierra (our dog)
Tim Hughes song - "Everything" - this song is really keeping me grounded this week
Super Glue
Sharpee Markers
A fresh new journal
The internet
Italian food
Psalms 150:6 - Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
I totally want to find some *random* group in OC and check it out. There was a group for Italians who own greyhound dogs, and some other random stuff. Anyway, maybe I should start my own meetup.
But what would it be? Girls who want to discuss Star Wars? People who want to discuss pop culture? A group who battle out at old school Tetris?
In other news, I got my Uggs today! :) I took this pic while upside down, but it turned out pretty cool - even if it is my iphone camera..
Billy Joel's - "It's still rock and roll to me" is my song of the day.
"Everybody's talking bout the new sound, honey, but it's still rock and roll to me"
Rock. And Roll.
Your mission, if you choose to accept, listen to one song today that makes you jump up and down in the middle of your room, singing into a hair brush, and smashing imaginary guitars into imaginary speakers, with the imaginary crowd totally rocking.
I expect comments on the song you choose.
Here are mine for the day:
"I slept with someone in fall out boy and all i got was this stupid song written about me" - Fall Out Boy
"I want you to want me" - Cheap Trick (Oh, Heath Ledger, it is SO sad, I have been unable to watch the 10 things I hate about you, even though I really want to)
"Don't stop me now" - Queen (Enough said, if this one doesn't get your heart beating, you must be heartless)
It is an either very well know fact (if you know me well) or a very surprising fact (if you don't know me at all) that Better Than Ezra is my favorite band.
They were the first band that was mine. I discovered them on my own (without the help of my parents), I bought the CD on my own (their first, Deluxe), and I enjoyed them on my own. This band shaped 8th grade.
While everyone else was jamming along to "Good", I listened to the whole CD, and appreciated it like nothing else I had ever heard.
Then I followed them through the years. And the years have been good to BTE.
One of the greatest BTE related events was the first time I saw them live. They lead me to find Something Corporate, probably the second most influential band obsession in my life. SoCo opened for BTE way back when they were a tiny OC high school band.
I haven't seen them too many times (if I am remembering correctly it was once at the Galaxy, once at the Belly Up Tavern, once at HOB Anaheim, and I think that is it...). But they just rock.
Anyway, the point being music has always been a constant in my life. When I was in kindergarten I listened to KROQ. I remember loving the Ramones, and I used to call songs "sequels" if they were by the same band. "Hey Mom, is 20 20 20 4 hours to go a sequel to sheena is a punk rocker?" I also was obsessed with Oingo Boingo, Moriessey, The Smiths, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, Bon Jovi, and Madonna. I probably had more cassette tapes than any other kid in the neighborhood.
I am so enthusiastic about music - which is probably the understatement of the century.
Here is one of the funniest pics of the new year: The annual Joshua Tree pic, with all four of us on our iPhones. What is the world coming to? And now for the real reason for this post:
I briefly worked as an Intern on Hall & Oats episode of VH1's Behind the Music. I loved being exposed to music that is more along the "classic" or "super pop" or whatever you wanted to call it. It was like this giant Pandora's box of brilliantness was spilled on me, and I had to listen as fast as I could to catch up on at least a good 50 years of music that I wasn't alive to hear first hand.
That said, I dug up this song today in my iTunes. I am bound and determined to own as many genres, bands, decades of music possible. I want to be able to listen to anything. Whenever. I love that I live in an age where this is possible. I need to spend at least days in Amoeba catching up on albums that I don't currently own.
Just read these lyrics. They are so moving. Even though this is a song that conventionally I would probably not like, today it sort of made sense. And made me dream about things I want to accomplish in life, which is pretty dramatic to say, but whatever. It did. :)
WHY is music so moving/amazing/brilliant/inspiring/emotional/comforting/explaining/dramatic/intense/satisfying? Hall & Oats - You Make My Dreams Come True
"What I want, you've got And it might be hard to handle But like the flame that burns the candle The candle feeds the flame What I've gots full stock of thoughts and dreams that scatter You pull them all together And how, I cant explain But you make my dreams come true On a night when bad dreams become a screamer When they're messin' with the dreamer I can laugh it in the face Twist and shout my way out And wrap yourself around me cause I ain't the way that you found me I'll never be the same cause you make my dreams come true I'm down on the daydream That sleepwalk should be over by now I know that you make my dreams come true" What I want, youve got And it might be hard to handle But like the flame that burns the candle The candle feeds the flame What Ive gots full stock of thoughts and dreams that scatter You pull them all together And how, I cant explain But you make my dreams come true On a night when bad dreams become a screamer When theyre messin with the dreamer I can laugh it in the face Twist and shout my way out And wrape yourself around me cause I aint the way that you found me Ill never be the same cause you may my dreams come true Im down on the daydream That sleepwalk should be over by now I know that you make my dreams come true
Tonight I am organizing all of my music. This is a weekly, or bi-monthly, occurance in which I burn all of my online purchases, and organize into cd binders. I have lived the sad life in which all my digital music was lost in a computer crash, and I now vowed to never have that happen again - at least not at the magintude of the 30-some odd gigs that I lost back in 2005. Wow, 2005 sounds like AGES ago, but that was like three years now.
This CD makes me want to pack up and move to Brighton, England - going out to sweet indie clubs every night, meeting the creative types that live in Brighton, and journal down by the fire-destroyed pier.
People might disagree, but I put her in a league somewhere between "lily allen" and "feist", but not quite either.
I WISH this was in Orange County. I need to talk to Equinox about adding this as a class.

(An oldie blog, but a goodie. This year commemorates my sixth year of bloging. Yeah, can you believe it? SIX years of pouring out my random, personal, and strange thoughts on the internet. I may start re-posting some from 2002, if you are lucky...)

Music.
So, for those of you who were A) over at my place on sat night or B) happened to catch the first 15 mins of SNL - be advised, some plagiarism is involved in this blog. For those of you who did not, these are all 100% my own ideas. :)
In all seriousness, music *is* the closest thing to time travel we ever receive. I like to hearken the memory of those of us who remember hearing "My heart will go on" after seeing the movie Titanic. I know you cried.
Let's explore my top five time travel experiences from this weekend while listening to music:
5. Brian and I were listening to Eliott Smith on the way home from LAX. (Long story) Eliott Smith reminds me of being 19, the worst year of my life thus far. Ptloma, the bowels of Klassen, gross. But I was taken straight back to that time, those feelings. 4. Journey - We were at the fair, and "Don't Stop Believing" came on. We all broke out and started singing in a very "October Road" type fashion. I am pretty sure .01% of you will catch that reference, but October Road had some lovely scenes with friends singing. 3. Stevie Wonder - I believe when I fall in love with you, it will be forever. This also took me back to that horrible sophomore year at ptloma. It was the first time I had ever seen High Fidelity, and I hated it. (aka, I didn't get it) Once I hit the summer of 02 and became extremely well-versed in all things hip (thanks kurti) then this movie became a fave. It also reminds me of a great mix CD I was once given, along with a clove. 2. Jimmy Eat World - Ten. Freshman year. Ptloma. It is truly strange, because I try to block out college at most times, due to the fact that life is so much better now. Ok, block out is strong, but I typically don't harp on it. Some memories are fantastic, but the over all feeling is that life today is the best it has ever been, so why harp on those years? However, this song gave me good feelings about that year when it came on party shuffle today. 1. WEIRDEST musical occurence, probably ever. Today, I was listening to "Thnks fr th mmrs", which is also my ringtone for text messages. I got a text at the exact moment, so both the song and the text played in perfect unison. What are the odds of that? I will probably remember that for awhile.
So, take that HG Wells. My time machine is better than yours.
I love relaxing. Most of the time, being the extremist extrovert that I am, I get my energy from being around people. Today, I am a bit run down and I am still getting my energy from people - just through the art they create. (ie, music, movies, and books)
Reading:
Mind: Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger Soul: Soul Cravings - Erwin McManus If I'm Waiting on God, then what am I doing in a Christian Chatroom? - Kerri Pomarolli Body: Lucky Magazine - Feb 08 Us Weekly Glamour - Feb 08
Listening:
Placebo - Meds (Placebo is of of my top bands) Cheap Trick - I want you to want me The Velvet Underground - various tracks, pillaged from itunes Queen - (my fall back to feel amazingly happy) Castledoor - Follow the Dove EP
Watching:
When Harry Met Sally - I pretty much have the HUGEST crush on Billy Crystal in this movie. Sort of Seth Cohen meets every neurotic Jewish character in movies ever. Sideways - I do not recommend. This movie BLOWS. Studio 60 on Sunset Strip - BLISS Romeo and Juliet - the Baz Lurman version. Oh Leo...
I am slightly sick and the amazing combo of these things make me happy.
My fireplace is on, candles lit across my room, enjoying the amazing comfort of my place that I am so lucky to have, sharing it with all of my favorite bands, who haunt the air - filling in the spaces between.
When I was in 5th grade I was in a bell choir. I loved it. Because I could easily read the cards to know when it is my turn to play. Hold that thought.
A few nights ago I discovered Castledoor - a local LA band on Check 1 2, on Indie 103.1.
The song I heard was "Burn the Maps". I went to iTunes and downloaded the full EP almost immediately.
Then I listened to the track "Magnetic Fields". There is a faint bell choir type sound that brought me back to 5th grade bell choir, in a raw rock and roll way. I was then transported to a swirling dreamlike deja vu of mixing sounds reminiscent of Lovedrug, Mew, and dashes of Muse.
"You make me move with magnetic forces and super glue/I got a feeling that I don't deserve this/ but I will preserve it/ I won't desert it/ I'm yours/ I'm yours/ I'm yours"
I know nothing about this band other than this EP is flawless and I am happy to spend some QT thinking while listening.
